Story:
When Robert Taira first opened his bakery in Hilo, Hawaii, a tradition was born. Eventually moving to Honolulu, and opening the city's first combination restaurant and bakery to great success, people came from great distances to enjoy the delicous food. In particular, Robert's sweet Portugese bread received rave reviews from locals and visitors alike.
In 1977, King's Hawaiian bread was introduced to the mainland. The Torrance, CA factory opened and soon after bread products created with Robert's signature quality were distributed nationwide.
In 1988, King's Hawaiian full-service bakery & restaurant, featuring delicious baked goods, local Hawaiian and traditional American cuisines, opened and quickly became one of the South Bay's most popular bakery/restaurants. Patrons have been known to travel hours just to eat there. One featured specialty is the King's Original Recipe French Toast.
In 2002, to meet expanding demand, another restaurant, The Local Place, a fast and casual cafe and bakery, also opened in Torrance, CA.
